I buy online a lot. I use my debit card. It works perfectly.

This may be TMI, but:
Be careful who you buy from, though. Not every website is safe. Big brand chain names are usually the best. I order a lot from WalMart, JC Penney, Crate & Barrel, etc. If I find something from a company I'm not familar with I don't trust them automatically. In this case I will search the website for a Contact Us section and/or look for a contact phone number like 1-800. The first time I order from a company I'll use that contact number and talk to a human with my order. After that, I use their website. If all they have to reach them is an e-mail address, I refuse to give them my order or my card number. I formulated these "rules" for myself because I got burned on an order once. Basically, it's your money, and your identity -- Protect it.

You can use your debit card. But I like paypal much more. It is very convenient and safe. You can try it.

You can open a PayPal account without a credit card, and many merchants now accept PayPal.

Many (most?) online merchants will accept debit cards, and if your debit card has a Visa or MasterCard logo on it, you can use it as a credit card at those merchants that don't take debit cards (keep in mind that the funds still come straight out of your account just like a debit transaction).

Hope this helps!

But beware in case a conflict arises a debit card does NOT offer as much protection as a credit card!

In Australia at the post office, you can purchase one off credit cards (visa) with a set dollar amount in them which are then able to be used to purchase goods on line. There is probally something similar available where you live.

Debit cards work.
But I would suggest you set up a second checking account, and only deposit money that you plan to spend on line. Just a defense against getting your card info stolen.
